Latin America & the Caribbean Division

The Latin America and Caribbean region includes 33 countries and three main sub regions: South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico.

These 33 countries are; Brazil, Cuba, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Commonwealth of Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela.

Sri Lanka maintains two resident consular missions in the region. The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brazil holds concurrent accreditation to nine Latin American countries, namely Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, and Uruguay. In addition, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Cuba is concurrently accredited to nine countries: the Commonwealth of Dominica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ecuador, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, and Venezuela. The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington, D.C., holds concurrent accreditation to Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago. The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York is concurrently accredited to The Bahamas.

Furthermore, Sri Lanka maintains its relations with countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region through the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and the High Commission in New Delhi.

Brazil and Cuba manage their interests through their embassies in Sri Lanka. Other countries in the region manage their interests through their embassies in New Delhi. The Embassy of Panama in Vietnam has contemporary recognition for Sri Lanka.

Diplomatic Relations: This region is important for Sri Lanka's political and economic relations. Sri Lanka enjoys friendly relations with all the countries in this region. Diplomatic relations have been established between Sri Lanka and all thirty three (33) countries.

Honorary Vice Ambassadors: honorary vice Ambassadors have been appointed to the Bahamas, Chile, Brazil (Sao Paulo), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Panama and Suriname.

Organization of American States: The Organization of American States (OAS), the premier multilateral forum for the Latin American and Caribbean region, with Sri Lanka as a permanent observer, provides a unique platform to engage constructively with countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region, or the Western Hemisphere, to strengthen interregional dialogue, and to foster mutual understanding and cooperation. Furthermore, the OAS National Offices, which are present in all countries of the Western Hemisphere, allow permanent observers to interact at the domestic level through their embassies. Currently, there are 75 permanent observers in the OAS, which is made up of 34 individual member states.
