Establishment of Diplomatic Relations with Cuba

Sirimavo Bandaranaike was elected as the world’s first female Prime Minister on 21 July 1960. She addressed the 26th session of the United Nations General Assembly in 1971.

Ceylon was elected as a member of the United Nations Security Council in 1960.  Sir Claude Corea became the first-ever President of the United Nations Security Council from Ceylon in May 1960.

Sri Lanka first contribution to a United Nations Peacekeeping mission in 1960, by deploying Six peacekeepers to the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC).

Diplomatic Relations with the European Commission established.

Diplomatic Relations with the Republic of Maldives established on 26 July 1956.
